Dermal fillers are becoming more popular than ever, but let’s be honest – social media and reality TV have really muddied the waters. Celebrities and influencers can sometimes give the impression that more is always better when it comes to fillers, but that’s simply not true. We’ve all seen examples where too much filler leads to unnatural, overdone looks – Amanda Bynes is a well-known case of this. These kinds of results can make people nervous about even the smallest touch-ups. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
At Flawless Medical Cosmetics, my philosophy is simple: when it comes to fillers, less really is more. So let's chit chat about why a more subtle approach can leave you looking fresh, natural, and confident.
What Dermal Fillers Are (And What They Shouldn’t Be)
Dermal fillers are designed to enhance what you’ve already got. They add volume where it’s been lost, smooth out fine lines, and bring out the best in your natural features. They're not supposed to drastically change your appearance or make you look like someone else.
Most of the fillers I use are hyaluronic acid-based like Restylane and Profhilo®, which is a substance naturally found in your skin that adds hydration and volume. The beauty of these fillers is how versatile they are. Whether you want to give your lips a little boost, smooth out under-eye hollows, or add a gentle lift to your cheeks, there’s a filler for that. But the key is how much we use – and I’m all about keeping it natural.
Why Less is More
When it comes to cosmetic treatments, subtlety is everything, let me tell you - a little really can go a long way. You don’t need a lot of filler to make a noticeable difference. Just the right amount over a period of time can add definition to your lips or soften those smile lines without making it obvious that you’ve had anything done.
For example, a tiny bit of filler in the lips can give you that definition and slight plumpness without going overboard. Similarly, when we work on cheeks or the under-eye area, the goal is to restore lost volume, not to create exaggerated features that look unnatural. My goal is always to enhance your unique beauty, not to change it.
I’ve seen it time and time again and even treated patients who have had too much filler elsewhere: when you opt for a lighter touch, you walk away looking refreshed and balanced, not "filled." You’ll still look like you – just a more well-rested, radiant version of you which is what most patients are looking for.
The Influence of Media on Beauty Standards
Now, we have to address the elephant in the room: social media and celebrity culture. We’ve all seen those overly filtered images of celebrities or influencers who’ve clearly gone overboard with treatments. It’s easy to scroll through Instagram and think, "should I look like that too?"
But here’s the thing – many of those images are not only edited but also represent a very specific, and often exaggerated, look. What works on a red carpet or in a photoshoot doesn’t necessarily translate into real life. The ultra-plumped lips and frozen expressions might look good on Instagram, but they often look out of place in reality.
Here's an example of Amanda Bynes who's a natural beauty, but someone has in my opinion, completely overfilled her lips resulting in assymetry.
One thing I advocate for, is that it's important to have realistic expectations about what fillers or any kind of skin rejuvenating treatment can and should do. My role is to help you navigate those expectations and make sure we stay true to your natural beauty, not some unrealistic standard set by social media.
The Importance of an Honest Consultation
If you’re considering fillers, the most important part of the process is the consultation. This is where we have a real, open conversation about your goals, any concerns you have, and what you’re hoping to achieve.
During your consultation with me, we’ll talk through all your options, and I’ll guide you toward a plan that enhances what makes you, you. I always take the time to listen and ensure we’re on the same page because, in the end, it’s about your comfort and your confidence. My goal is for you to leave feeling like the best version of yourself aka looking and feeling flawless – not like someone else entirely.
Dermal fillers are an amazing tool, but only when used with care and precision. I believe fillers should highlight your natural beauty, not mask it. A small, thoughtful approach will always yield better results than going overboard. When done right, you’ll look refreshed, radiant, and you.
If you’ve been thinking about trying fillers or if you’re unsure about how much is right for you, I’d love to help. Get in touch to start the conversation about how we can enhance your natural features with a subtle touch that brings out the best in your beauty.
